B(u)y the Book – Assouline Geneva

When it comes to coffee table books and tomes related to luxury lifestyles, nobody quite matches the quality and reputation of New York-based Assouline.

Established by Martine and Prosper Assouline in 1994 as “the first luxury brand on culture”, the publisher of high-end one-of-a-kind books on art, fashion, design, architecture, photography and travel has been so successful that they’ve opened a number of boutique stores in key luxury markets around the world.

One of the newest, Assouline Geneva, opened in 2015 on Rue Pierre Fatio overlooking beautiful Jardin Anglais. Hosted by Sheik Mohammed and Martine Assouline, the well-attended event introduced the Swiss city to the luxury publisher’s extensive catalogue, including a special signing of the Assouline founders’ La Colombe d’Or, the company’s first book (since then, the company has gone on to publish some 1,500 titles).

Under the management of art experts Mélanie Pellanda and Stéphanie Maurice, the store’s a delight to visit for serious book collectors and browsers alike. As well as its large stock of Assouline’s books, the store also offers a line of unique library décor and furnishings, one of the most popular items being the Mondrian bookcase designed by the founders themselves. Also available is the company’s superb bespoke bookbinding service, vintage and special edition books and box sets, trunks, leather goods, stationery, scented candles and antiques.

For an added touch of class – especially nice for gifts – purchases can be giftwrapped in the company’s trademark white matte paper, an added touch of authenticity that’s only topped by the addition of a red wax seal.

In addition to its Geneva location, Assouline also boasts a retail presence in such destinations as London, Paris, Mexico City, Venice, Rome and Seoul, to name but a few.

Known for its attention to detail, each Assouline title is a tribute to traditional bookbinding techniques with images individually hand-tipped, a complex process that requires cutting, gluing and placement of each photo on the page. The covers are also hand-bound, and together with the sumptuous quality of the paper used ensure that each book is itself a work of art.
